About Bill Laimbeer

A 6'11" center out of Notre Dame, Bill Laimbeer was a third-round pick (65th overall) of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1979 NBA Draft, but first spent a season with Basket Brescia in Italy before debuting for the Cavaliers in 1980. Traded to the Detroit Pistons in 1982, he anchored the frontcourt for 11 seasons across a 14-year career. A skilled outside-shooting big man and fierce rebounder, Laimbeer led the NBA in rebounding in 1985-86 and made four All-Star teams (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987), finishing with 13,790 points (12.9 ppg) and 10,400 rebounds (9.7 rpg). He was a cornerstone of Detroit's "Bad Boys," the punishing crew whose physical, villainous style powered back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990; opponents loathed his hard fouls even as Pistons fans revered him. Detroit retired his #40 in 1995. He later became a highly successful WNBA head coach, winning three titles with the Detroit Shock.
