About Larry Drew
Born Larry Donnell Drew, this steady point guard starred at the University of Missouri before the Detroit Pistons made him the 17th overall pick in the 1980 NBA Draft. After a rookie year in Detroit, he was dealt to the Kansas City Kings (who relocated to Sacramento in 1985), where he spent his most productive years running the offense. Over 10 NBA seasons with the Pistons, Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers, Drew appeared in 714 games and totaled 8,110 points (11.4 per game) and 3,702 assists (5.2 per game). His best season came in 1982-83, when he averaged 20.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 1.7 steals a game for the Kings, including a career-high 33 points against Houston on January 21, 1983. This card captures him on the Sacramento Kings, and it is treated by collectors as his rookie card (his earlier appearance in 1981-82 Topps was only a Team Leader cameo). After retiring, Drew became a longtime NBA coach, serving as a head coach for the Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers, and winning a title as a Cavaliers assistant in 2016. He was inducted into the Missouri and Kansas sports halls of fame.
