1986-87 Fleer #24 Darryl Dawkins

About Darryl Dawkins
A 6'11" center, Darryl Dawkins made history in 1975 when the Philadelphia 76ers took him 5th overall straight out of Maynard Evans High School in Orlando - the first player ever drafted by the NBA directly from high school. Over a 14-year career he played for the 76ers (1975-1982), New Jersey Nets (1982-1987), and briefly the Utah Jazz and Detroit Pistons, averaging 12.0 points and 6.1 rebounds across 726 games. He reached the NBA Finals three times with Philadelphia but never won a title, and was waived by the eventual-champion Pistons in March 1989 before their playoff run; despite his fame and thunderous play, he was never an All-Star. Stevie Wonder, a regular at Sixers games, gave him the nickname "Chocolate Thunder." Dawkins became a hobby legend in 1979 when he shattered two backboards with his dunks, prompting the NBA to adopt breakaway rims; he famously named his dunks and claimed to hail from the planet "Lovetron."
