1986-87 Fleer #104 Larry Smith
1986-87 Fleer #104 Larry Smith

About Larry Smith
A 6'8" power forward from Rolling Fork, Mississippi, Larry Smith starred at Alcorn State, where he led the NCAA in rebounding in 1980 and was a two-time SWAC Player of the Year. Golden State drafted him in the second round (24th overall) of the 1980 NBA Draft, and he made the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1981. Smith played 13 seasons (1980-1993) across 883 games for the Warriors (1980-89), Houston Rockets (1989-92), and San Antonio Spurs (1992-93), building a reputation as one of the decade's premier rebounders. He averaged 9.2 rebounds against just 6.7 points per game, led the NBA in offensive rebounds in 1985-86, and shares the record for most offensive boards in a quarter (11). His nickname "Mr. Mean" captured the contrast between a soft-spoken man off the floor and the fierce scowl he wore battling for rebounds. After retiring he became an assistant coach, earning two championship rings with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995.
