1986-87 Fleer #14 Joe Barry Carroll
1986-87 Fleer #14 Joe Barry Carroll

About Joe Barry Carroll
A 7'0" center out of Purdue, where he was a consensus First-Team All-American in 1980, Joe Barry Carroll was selected first overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 1980 NBA Draft. That pick came from one of the most lopsided trades in league history: Golden State sent Robert Parish and the draft rights that became Kevin McHale to Boston to move up and take him. Carroll averaged 18.9 points and 9.3 rebounds as a rookie, earning All-Rookie First Team honors in 1981, and made his lone All-Star appearance in 1987. Over an 11-season career (1980-1991) split among the Warriors, Rockets, Nets, Nuggets and Suns - with a season in Italy in 1984-85 - he averaged 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds and totaled more than 12,000 points. Critics knocked his perceived effort, saddling him with the nickname "Joe Barely Cares," and his selection over the two future Hall of Famers Golden State traded away colored his reputation for years.
