1986-87 Fleer #54 Marques Johnson

About Marques Johnson
A star at UCLA, Marques Johnson won the 1975 NCAA title and swept national player-of-the-year honors as a senior in 1977, taking the inaugural John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Award. The Milwaukee Bucks drafted the 6'7" small forward third overall in 1977, and he starred there for seven seasons (1977-1984) before moving to the Los Angeles Clippers, the team shown on this card, for three more (1984-1987), with a brief 1989 return with Golden State. A five-time All-Star (1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1986), he made All-NBA First Team in 1979 and Second Team in 1980 and 1981, averaging 20.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.6 assists over his career. He is widely credited with coining the term "point forward," a role Bucks coach Don Nelson gave him amid injuries in 1984. Johnson was named NBA Comeback Player of the Year in 1986 and later acted, memorably as Raymond in White Men Can't Jump; Milwaukee retired his No. 8 in 2019.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Marques Johnson is card #54 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Marques Johnson was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Los Angeles Clippers.
