About Walt Dropo
A hulking 6-foot-5 first baseman from Moosup, Connecticut, Walt Dropo starred in football, basketball, and baseball at the University of Connecticut before signing with the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1947. He debuted in 1949 and enjoyed a spectacular rookie campaign in 1950, batting .322 with 34 home runs while leading the American League in total bases (326) and tying teammate Vern Stephens for the AL RBI crown with 144. That season earned him AL Rookie of the Year honors, making him the first Red Sox player to win the award, and a starting berth in the All-Star Game. Over 13 seasons (1949-1961) he also played for the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Redlegs, and Baltimore Orioles, finishing with a .270 average, 1,113 hits, 152 home runs, and 704 RBI across 1,288 games. In July 1952, shortly after a trade to Detroit, he tied the major-league record with 12 consecutive hits. Nicknamed "Moose," a tag drawn from both his imposing size and his hometown of Moosup, Dropo died in 2010 at age 87.
