1952 Topps #236 Ed FitzGerald

About Ed FitzGerald
Ed FitzGerald was a defensive-minded catcher who attended Saint Mary's College in California and served in the U.S. Army during World War II before signing into the Sacramento Solons organization in 1946. He debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948 and spent 12 big-league seasons (1948-1960) split among the Pirates (1948-1953), Washington Senators (1953-1959) and Cleveland Indians (1959-1960), working mostly as a reliable backup receiver. Over 807 games he batted .260 with 19 home runs and 217 RBI, reaching career highs of a .289 average and 115 games played in 1954. Behind the plate for one of the era's memorable feats, he caught Cliff Chambers' no-hitter against the Braves on May 6, 1951, and years later he broke up Billy Pierce's bid for a perfect game with a ninth-inning pinch double on June 27, 1958. Never an All-Star, he later served as a bullpen coach for the Kansas City Athletics and Minnesota Twins and managed in the minor leagues. On this 1952 Topps card, his surname is printed as two words, "Fitz Gerald," a documented spelling variation that collectors still note today.
