About Jerry Coleman
Jerry Coleman (1924-2014) was a slick-fielding second baseman who spent six seasons in the Yankees' farm system before debuting in the majors in 1949, when his .275 average helped New York to a pennant and earned him Associated Press Rookie of the Year honors. Over nine seasons (1949-1957), all with the Yankees, he batted .263 with 16 home runs and 217 RBIs, was named to the American League All-Star team in 1950, and won four World Series championships (1949, 1950, 1951, 1956). His finest October came in the 1950 Series, when his glove and clutch hitting against the Phillies made him the Series MVP, recognized with the Babe Ruth Award. Nicknamed "The Colonel" for his rank as a U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, Coleman was a combat aviator who flew 120 missions across World War II and Korea, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 13 Air Medals as the only major leaguer to see combat in both wars. He later became the beloved radio voice of the San Diego Padres, famous for "You can hang a star on that one, baby!," and received broadcasting's Ford C. Frick Award in 2005. This card sits in the fourth series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, printed before the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the hobby's iconic Mickey Mantle.
