About Luis Aparicio

Luis Aparicio, born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, was a slick-fielding shortstop for the Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox from 1956 to 1973. He won the 1956 American League Rookie of the Year award, becoming the first Latin American player so honored, after leading the league in stolen bases and sacrifice hits. Nicknamed "Little Louie," Aparicio led the majors in stolen bases for nine consecutive seasons (1956-1964) and won nine Gold Gloves, leading AL shortstops in fielding percentage every year from 1959 to 1966. In 1959 he helped power the "Go-Go" White Sox to the American League pennant, scoring 98 runs and stealing 56 bases while finishing second in AL MVP voting. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1984, becoming the first Venezuelan-born player inducted in Cooperstown. His 1959 Topps cards (#310 and #560) arrive during that pennant-clinching season.
