1959 Topps #410 Billy Pierce

About Billy Pierce
Billy Pierce was the ace left-hander of the Chicago White Sox for a decade, from 1952 to 1961, a stretch in which the club posted the third-best record in the major leagues. A seven-time All-Star, he led the American League in complete games three times and topped the league once each in wins, ERA, and strikeouts, earning The Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year honors in both 1956 and 1957. Despite a slight build, the diminutive southpaw was known for his competitive fire and pinpoint control. He picked up the nickname "Mr. Zero" as a high school standout in Michigan and was affectionately called "Billy the Kid" throughout his pro career. Pierce helped anchor the pitching staff of the 1959 pennant-winning "Go-Go" White Sox, and he later debuted on the Hall of Fame's Golden Era Committee ballot. His 1959 Topps cards reflect his standing as one of the era's premier pitchers.
