About Early Wynn
Hall of Famer Early "Gus" Wynn began his professional career in 1937 and pitched 23 big-league seasons for the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox. He anchored Cleveland's rotation alongside fellow future Hall of Famers Bob Feller and Bob Lemon, helping the Indians to the 1954 American League pennant. Traded to the White Sox for 1958, Wynn had his signature season in 1959, winning the AL Cy Young Award (then given to a single pitcher across both leagues) with a 22-10 record and leading Chicago to its first pennant in 40 years — the very season captured on this 1959 Topps card. Famously fierce on the mound, Wynn was said to have declared he'd knock down his own mother if she crowded the plate. He won his 300th and final game on July 13, 1963, at age 43, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972, finishing with a 300-244 record and 2,334 strikeouts.
