About Johnny Podres / Clem Labine / Don Drysdale "Hitters' Foes"

This "Hitters' Foes" combo card pairs three Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers who anchored the club's staff in the late 1950s. Johnny Podres was the hero of the 1955 World Series, shutting out the Yankees in Game 7 at age 23 to give Brooklyn its only championship. Clem Labine, a two-time All-Star reliever, won World Series rings in 1955 and would add another in 1959, closing games for the Dodgers throughout the decade. Don Drysdale, the group's youngest member, was building toward Hall of Fame stardom — he would go on to nine All-Star selections and three World Series titles (1959, 1963, 1965) and lead the National League in strikeouts multiple times. Topps grouped the trio to spotlight the pitching that made Dodgers hitters' jobs easier and opposing hitters' jobs miserable heading into the 1959 season, in which the Dodgers went on to beat the White Sox for the World Series title.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 199-286)

Every card #199-286 exists with the reverse printed on white card stock OR gray card stock. Per PSA the GRAY back is the less common of the two (correcting the older "roughly equal" claim), but there is NO price differential (Beckett) — the difference is a scarcity/completeness point, not a value flag. The tint is on the reverse and is not reliably visible on a front scan.

  • White Back: Printed on white card stock — the more common Series 3 back.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock — the scarcer Series 3 back (PSA), but with no established price premium.
