About Ron Fairly
Ron Fairly signed with the Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1958 after helping USC win the College World Series that June, and debuted in the majors that September at age 20. His 1959 Topps card caught him just as he became a fixture in the Los Angeles outfield and at first base, a role he held through 1969 while the Dodgers won pennants and World Series titles in 1959, 1963, and 1965. Fairly went on to a 21-year career (1958–1978) with the Dodgers, Expos, Cardinals, and A's, finishing with 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, and a .266 average over 2,442 games, and was selected to two All-Star teams. Known for a sharp batting eye, he drew 1,052 walks against only 877 strikeouts. After retiring he became a longtime, well-regarded television broadcaster for the Angels, Giants, and Mariners.

Variations & how to tell them apart
Venezuelan Parallel
Topps issued a partial parallel of the set for the Venezuelan market, printed on thinner card stock and credited "Impreso en Venezuela por Benco C.A." on the back. Hobby checklists most often list the run as cards 1-196, though sources disagree and the exact range has never been definitively documented. Venezuelan cards are far scarcer than their U.S. counterparts and usually surface with heavy wear; collectors treat them as a separate parallel, not part of the standard 572-card set.
