About Dale Long / Ernie Banks / Walt Moryn "Cubs' Clubbers"
This multi-player card celebrates three Chicago Cubs sluggers from the 1958 season: Dale Long, Ernie Banks, and Walt Moryn, collectively the "Cubs' Clubbers." Banks, in the midst of his back-to-back National League MVP seasons, led the majors with a then-record 47 home runs for a shortstop, batting .313 with 129 RBI in 1958. Long, acquired by the Cubs in a 1957 trade with Pittsburgh, hit 20 home runs in 1958 and made history that September by becoming the first left-handed catcher in the majors in 56 years — five years after setting the still-standing MLB record of home runs in eight consecutive games (1956, with Pittsburgh). Moryn, the Cubs' left fielder, earned his only All-Star selection in 1958 after a career-best 26 home runs, highlighted by a three-homer game against Brooklyn that May. Together the trio anchored the middle of a Cubs lineup built around power, even as the team finished below .500 that year.
Variations & how to tell them apart
Venezuelan Parallel
Topps issued a partial parallel of the set for the Venezuelan market, printed on thinner card stock and credited "Impreso en Venezuela por Benco C.A." on the back. Hobby checklists most often list the run as cards 1-196, though sources disagree and the exact range has never been definitively documented. Venezuelan cards are far scarcer than their U.S. counterparts and usually surface with heavy wear; collectors treat them as a separate parallel, not part of the standard 572-card set.
