About Jim Bunning

Jim Bunning entered pro ball in the Detroit Tigers system and became one of the era's most durable right-handers, pitching from 1955 to 1971 for the Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies among other clubs, and appears on his 1959 Topps card as an established Detroit ace. On July 20, 1958, he threw the first of his two career no-hitters with the Tigers; the second came after his 1964 trade to Philadelphia, when he tossed a perfect game against the Mets on Father's Day, June 21, 1964 — the first Phillies no-hitter in 58 years and the ninth perfect game in major-league history. An eight-time All-Star, Bunning won 224 games and 2,855 strikeouts, becoming just the second pitcher after Cy Young to reach 100 wins and 1,000 strikeouts in both leagues. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996, and later served as a U.S. Senator from Kentucky.
