About Larry Doby

Larry Doby, born Lawrence Eugene Doby, began his career in the Negro Leagues with the Newark Eagles before signing with the Cleveland Indians and debuting on July 5, 1947 — just eleven weeks after Jackie Robinson, making him the first Black player in American League history. A center fielder, he became a star for Cleveland, helping the club to the 1948 World Series championship and again to the 1954 AL pennant, while earning nine All-Star selections and leading the AL in home runs twice. Doby finished his 13-year career (1947-1959) with 273 home runs and a .283 average, closing out with a brief 1959 season split between the White Sox and Tigers. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1998, and in 1978 became just the second Black manager in major league history, leading the White Sox. His 1959 Topps card (#455) captures him in his final major league season.
