1959 Topps #450 Ed Mathews

About Ed Mathews
Eddie Mathews, nicknamed "Eddie Mattress" and the "Santa Barbara Bomber," debuted with the Boston Braves on April 15, 1952, and spent 15 of his 17 seasons (1952-1966) as the Braves' third baseman through their moves to Milwaukee and Atlanta. A prodigious left-handed power hitter, he led the NL in home runs twice, made 12 All-Star teams, and combined with Hank Aaron to form one of the most fearsome young power duos in history; the pair remain the top home-run-hitting teammate tandem in MLB history. Mathews starred on Milwaukee's 1957 World Series champions, fielding the series-clinching putout, and finished his career with 512 home runs and 2,315 hits. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978. His 1959 Topps card (#450) shows him in the midst of his prime Milwaukee years, a season after his World Series title.
