About Del Crandall

Del Crandall was an 11-time All-Star catcher who spent the bulk of his career with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves from 1949 to 1966, and was a key member of the Braves' 1957 World Series championship team. A four-time Gold Glove winner, he was regarded as the top defensive catcher of his era, leading the National League in assists a record-tying six times, in fielding percentage four times, and in putouts three times. Crandall caught three no-hitters, including Jim Wilson's in 1954 and two more by Lew Burdette and Warren Spahn in 1960. He and Spahn formed one of the most durable batteries in baseball history, starting 316 games together, a mark that stood as a record until 1975. After retiring, Crandall managed the Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners. He died in 2021 at age 91. His 1959 Topps cards reflect his standing as the National League's premier defensive catcher.
