1959 Topps #568 Gus Triandos

About Gus Triandos
Gus Triandos was a power-hitting catcher who became a four-time All-Star after being sent to the Baltimore Orioles in a blockbuster 1955 trade with the Yankees. At his peak in 1958, he slugged 30 home runs and started the All-Star Game for the American League at Memorial Stadium. That same year he was behind the plate for Hoyt Wilhelm's no-hitter against the Yankees on September 20, 1958 — the first no-hitter in Orioles history — and he drove in the game's only run with a home run. Because Wilhelm's knuckleball was so unpredictable, manager Paul Richards designed an oversized catcher's mitt for Triandos, though the passed balls piled up regardless (the giant glove was eventually outlawed). Triandos later became the first catcher to catch no-hitters in both leagues, adding Jim Bunning's perfect game with the Phillies in 1964. Over his eight years in Baltimore he hit 142 home runs. This 1959 Topps card shows him mid-tenure with the Orioles, the year after his All-Star peak.
