About Hank Aaron / Eddie Mathews "Fence Busters"

This "Fence Busters" combo card pairs Milwaukee Braves sluggers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews, the two power hitters anchoring the Braves' back-to-back World Series appearances against the Yankees in 1957 (a championship) and 1958. Mathews, who broke in with the Braves in 1952, had already established himself as one of the game's premier third basemen and home run threats, while Aaron — the reigning 1957 NL MVP after leading the league in homers and RBIs — was emerging as a superstar in his own right. Playing together from 1954 through 1966, the two would go on to combine for 863 home runs (442 for Aaron, 421 for Mathews), the most by any teammate pairing in major-league history, surpassing the Yankees' Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Both are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame — Mathews in 1978 and Aaron in 1982, elected with 97.8% of the vote. Topps' "Fence Busters" card celebrates the pair at the height of their shared power-hitting fame in Milwaukee.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 199-286)

Every card #199-286 exists with the reverse printed on white card stock OR gray card stock. Per PSA the GRAY back is the less common of the two (correcting the older "roughly equal" claim), but there is NO price differential (Beckett) — the difference is a scarcity/completeness point, not a value flag. The tint is on the reverse and is not reliably visible on a front scan.

  • White Back: Printed on white card stock — the more common Series 3 back.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock — the scarcer Series 3 back (PSA), but with no established price premium.
