About Duke Snider

Edwin "Duke" Snider — nicknamed by his father at age five for his confident, regal swagger — became the center fielder of Brooklyn's beloved "Boys of Summer," the Dodgers teams immortalized in Roger Kahn's book. Signed by Brooklyn and debuting in 1947, Snider anchored center field through the Dodgers' golden era, hitting 40 or more home runs in five different seasons of the 1950s and leading the majors in both home runs and RBI for the decade. An eight-time All-Star, he was pivotal to Brooklyn's only championship, the 1955 World Series win over the Yankees, and played in the Fall Classic six times overall, winning twice. By 1959, the year of this card, Snider was manning center for the Los Angeles Dodgers after the franchise's 1958 move west. He retired with a .295 average, 407 home runs, and 1,333 RBI, and the Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 1980.
