About George Hunter

George Henry Hunter (July 7, 1887 - January 11, 1968) was a left-handed pitcher and outfielder who reached the majors after working up from the Buffalo sandlots and semipro ball, signing in 1907 with the Wilkes-Barre Coal Barons of the Class B New York State League. A switch-hitter, he pitched a full season in 1908 for Nashville before the Brooklyn Superbas brought him up. Hunter debuted on May 4, 1909, and enjoyed a promising rookie campaign, posting a 4-10 record with a sharp 2.46 ERA over 113-1/3 innings while also making 23 appearances in the outfield and batting .228 (28-for-123). A shoulder injury suffered chasing a pop fly derailed him; he abandoned pitching entirely after that freshman year, and Brooklyn released him early in 1910, ending a two-season big-league career. He drifted through the minors — Montreal, Rochester, Wilkes-Barre, and Elmira — until retiring in 1917. Hunter had an identical twin, Bill, who briefly reached the majors with Cleveland in 1912. He later worked at the Harrisburg (Pa.) Post Office and died at 80. Not a Hall of Famer, he is one of the T206 set's many common deadball-era subjects.
