About Joe Dunn
Joseph Edward "Bullets" Dunn (March 11, 1885 - March 19, 1944) was a catcher from Springfield, Ohio, who earned his nickname as a rifle-armed backstop in local Springfield leagues. Signed by the Atlanta Crackers in the fall of 1905, he made his pro debut in 1906 with the Columbia Gamecocks of the South Atlantic League. After starring for Evansville, Dunn reached the majors with the Brooklyn Superbas of the National League, appearing in 1908 and 1909 as a light-hitting backup to Bill Bergen. His first big-league at-bat, on September 12, 1908, was a two-run double off Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. Dunn hit only about .169 with no home runs across roughly 30 major-league games, then returned to a long minor-league career as a player, manager, and executive, winning pennants at Bloomington in 1919 and 1920 and Springfield in 1930, and helping restore pro ball to his hometown (the "Springfield Dunnmen" were named for him). A common, affordable subject in the famed T206 set, Dunn was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
