About Jack Dunn
John Joseph "Jack" Dunn (1872-1928), born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, entered pro ball in 1895 and reached the majors in 1897, winning 14 games for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms as a rookie. Over eight big-league seasons (1897-1904) with Brooklyn, Philadelphia, the NL Baltimore Orioles, and John McGraw's New York Giants, the pitcher-infielder went 64-59 with a 4.11 ERA and batted .245, finishing on McGraw's 1904 NL pennant winners. His enduring fame, though, is as a minor-league manager and owner: he took over the International League's Baltimore Orioles in 1907 and bought the club in 1909, building a dynasty that captured seven straight IL pennants from 1919 to 1925 — an unequaled feat in pro baseball — behind nine total championships. Dunn signed a teenage George Herman Ruth off St. Mary's in February 1914 and became his legal guardian; teammates dubbed the raw prospect "Dunn's baby," soon shortened to "Babe." Strapped by Federal League competition, Dunn sold Ruth to the Red Sox that July. He later developed Hall of Famer Lefty Grove. Dunn died in 1928. On this T206 he appears as a minor-league (Eastern/International League) subject.
