About Jimmy Slagle
James Franklin Slagle worked his way up from amateur ball in Clarion, Pennsylvania, turning professional with the Franklin club of the Iron and Oil League in 1894 before reaching the majors with Washington in 1899. A left-handed-hitting center fielder, the 5-foot-6 Slagle played ten big-league seasons (1899-1908) for the Washington Senators, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Beaneaters, and, from 1902, the Chicago Cubs. A patient leadoff man, he batted .268 with 619 walks and 274 stolen bases, and manned center for the powerhouse Cubs teams that won three straight pennants (1906-1908) and back-to-back World Series in 1907 and 1908. His signature moment came in the 1907 World Series against Detroit, where he stole six bases - including a steal of home in Game Four - a single-Series record that stood for decades. His diminutive size and small strike zone earned him the nicknames "Shorty," "The Rabbit," and "The Mosquito." He closed his career with Baltimore of the Eastern League (1909-1910), the team pictured on his T206 card. Slagle is not among the set's scarce or Hall-of-Fame subjects.
