About Frank Isbell
Born William Frank Isbell, this versatile deadball-era standout entered pro ball out of semipro clubs around Minneapolis, signing with Charles Comiskey's St. Paul Saints in the Western League in 1896. He reached the majors briefly with the Chicago Orphans (1898), then followed Comiskey to the new Chicago White Sox, playing there from 1900 to 1909. Nicknamed "Bald Eagle" for his receding hairline (a name he reportedly disliked), Isbell manned first and second base but famously handled all nine positions over his career. In 1901, the White Sox's first AL pennant season, he led the American League with 52 stolen bases. He was a key hitter on the 1906 "Hitless Wonders," Chicago's light-hitting World Series champions who upset the crosstown Cubs; Isbell led that club with 153 hits and hit .308 in the Series. In Game 5 he stroked four doubles, setting a World Series single-game extra-base-hit record that stood for over a century. A career .250 hitter over ten major-league seasons, he later became a successful minor-league manager and executive in the Western League. He was not elected to the Hall of Fame.
