About George Davis
George Stacey Davis (1870-1940) was one of the deadball era's finest all-around shortstops, a switch-hitter who signed with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890 on manager Tom York's recommendation and hit .264 as a 19-year-old rookie. Traded to the New York Giants in 1893, he became a model of consistency, batting over .300 every season from 1893 to 1901, including a .355 mark with 27 triples in 1893 and a .353 average with a league-best 135 RBI and 65 stolen bases in 1897. Jumping to the Chicago White Sox, Davis anchored the 1906 "Hitless Wonders," collecting six RBI over the final two games to help beat the crosstown Cubs in the World Series. Nicknamed "Gorgeous George" for his graceful play and blond hair, he retired in 1909 after 20 seasons with a .295 average, 2,665 hits, 1,440 RBI, and 619 stolen bases, the most ever by a primary shortstop at the time. Long overlooked, he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1998. As a Hall of Famer, Davis is one of the T206 set's more desirable subjects.
