About Fielder Jones
Fielder Allison Jones broke into pro ball in 1891 with Portland of the Oregon State League after working as a surveyor in the Pacific Northwest, and after seasoning in the minors he reached the majors with the Brooklyn Nationals in 1896, batting .354 as a rookie. A fleet, sharp-eyed center fielder, he starred for Brooklyn (1896-1900) and the Chicago White Sox (1901-1908), compiling a lifetime .285 average with 1,920 hits and 359 stolen bases over 15 seasons. He won pennants with Brooklyn in 1899 and 1900, then became the White Sox' playing manager and led the 1906 "Hitless Wonders" -- a club with a league-low .230 average -- to the American League flag and a stunning six-game World Series upset of the crosstown Cubs, Chicago's first title. His unusual first name was not a nickname but a family name, given for his great-uncle, a Civil War general. A pioneer of defense-first "inside baseball," Jones was ranked by his New York Times obituary alongside John McGraw and Connie Mack as one of the three greatest managers of his day. He died in Portland, Oregon, in 1934. He is not enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
