About Fred Jacklitsch
Frederick Lawrence Jacklitsch, a Brooklyn native born May 24, 1876, was a durable deadball-era catcher who reached the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies on June 6, 1900. A right-handed hitter and thrower, he spent thirteen big-league seasons scattered across nearly two decades, mostly behind the plate. His stops included the Phillies (1900-02 and again 1907-10), the Brooklyn Superbas (1903-04) and the New York Highlanders (1905). When the outlaw Federal League opened as a third major league, the veteran caught for the Baltimore Terrapins in 1914-15, appearing at age 38, then made a final cameo with the Boston Braves in 1917 at 41. Never a star, he was a workmanlike backstop: a .243 career average with 327 hits, 5 home runs and 153 RBIs. After his playing days he turned to coaching, leading the Amherst College nine (1919-1925) and Rutgers (1926-1931, 43-42). He is one of the many journeyman deadball subjects captured in the T206 White Border set. Jacklitsch died in Queens on July 18, 1937, and is buried at Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery.
