About Red Dooin
Charles Sebastian "Red" Dooin was the Philadelphia Phillies' iron-man catcher through the heart of the Deadball Era. Born June 12, 1879, in Cincinnati, he broke into pro ball with Indianapolis of the Western League in 1898, breaking his hand in his first game, and bounced through the minors before the Phillies bought his contract in 1902. A tiny backstop—about 5-foot-6 and barely 120 pounds—Dooin nonetheless caught 1,124 games for Philadelphia, a franchise record that stood until Mike Lieberthal broke it in 2006. He was a light hitter typical of the era, batting .240 over roughly 1,290 major-league games (1902–1916) with 344 RBIs. From 1910 through 1914 he served as the Phillies' player-manager, compiling a 392–370 record and lifting the club to second place in the 1913 National League. Dooin, who claimed to have pioneered rattan shin guards worn under his stockings, was also a trained baritone who sang on the vaudeville circuit in the offseason. He finished his playing days with Cincinnati and the New York Giants and died in 1952. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
