About Mickey Doolin

Born Michael Joseph Doolan in Ashland, Pennsylvania, "Doc" Doolan earned his nickname studying dentistry at Villanova College. After amateur ball around southeastern Pennsylvania and a stint at Jersey City of the Eastern League (1902-04), he reached the majors as the Philadelphia Phillies' everyday shortstop in 1905. Though a weak hitter, he was an elite defender: sportswriter Fred Lieb said he "could throw standing on his head," and Doolan repeatedly led National League shortstops in putouts, assists, and double plays between 1906 and 1913. He was named Phillies captain in 1909, holding the post through 1913. A career .238 hitter, his best season came in 1910 (.263, 141 hits, 31 doubles). Doolan jumped to the outlaw Federal League with Baltimore (1914) and then the Chicago Whales (1915), for whom he even started the rally in the pennant-clinching game. He later played for the Cubs, Giants, and Robins, coached in the majors, and practiced dentistry until 1947. Doolan died in 1951 and is not in the Hall of Fame.
