About Sherry Magee

Sherwood Robert Magee was discovered on the Carlisle, Pennsylvania sandlots by a Phillies scout in June 1904 and made his major-league debut at age 19 that same month. A five-tool left fielder, he anchored the Philadelphia Phillies from 1904 to 1914 as their cleanup hitter and greatest offensive star before finishing with the Boston Braves (1915-1916) and Cincinnati Reds (1917-1919). His signature 1910 season saw him lead the National League in batting (.331), runs, RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging; he paced the league in RBIs four times (1907, 1910, 1914, 1918) and in 1914 led in hits, doubles, RBIs, and slugging. Nicknamed simply "Sherry," short for Sherwood, he had a fiery temper — in 1911 he broke umpire Bill Finneran's nose in a disputed-call attack and drew a season-long suspension. He finally reached the World Series in 1919, winning a championship with the scandal-tainted Reds. Magee retired with a .291 average, 2,169 hits, and a Phillies-record 387 stolen bases; he is not in the Hall of Fame. His card is the most famous error in T206 — the surname is misspelled "MAGIE," a prized scarcity corrected early in the print run.
