About Jake Weimer
Jacob "Tornado Jake" Weimer, born November 29, 1873, in Ottumwa, Iowa, was a left-handed pitcher who toiled roughly eight seasons in the minor leagues before finally reaching the majors as a 29-year-old rookie. He broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 1903 and immediately starred, going 21-9 with a 2.30 ERA, then followed with a 20-14, 1.91 campaign in 1904. After an 18-12 season in 1905, the Cubs traded him to the Cincinnati Reds for third baseman Harry Steinfeldt. Weimer won 20 again for Cincinnati in 1906 and, on August 24 that year, threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the Brooklyn Superbas (a shortened gem later struck from the record books in 1991). He finished his seven-year career with the New York Giants in 1909, compiling a 97-69 record, a superb 2.23 ERA, and 657 strikeouts over 1,472-2/3 innings. His nickname traced to Reds sportswriter Jack Ryder's line, "After the cloudburst came the Tornado." Weimer is a common, non-scarce subject in the T206 set. He died June 19, 1928, in Chicago.
