About Jack Warhop
John Milton "Jack" Warhop was a right-handed pitcher whose entire eight-year major-league career (1908-1915) was spent with the New York Highlanders/Yankees. A railroad fireman from near Hinton, West Virginia, he broke into pro ball as a barnstorming "Cherokee Indians" fill-in, then dominated the low minors at Freeport (30-6, 339 strikeouts in 1907) and Williamsport (29-7 in 1908) before New York bought his contract. Working an unusual underhand, submarine delivery, he was nicknamed "Crab" for that motion and disposition, and was praised as the best underhanded pitcher since Joe McGinnity. Pitching for perennial second-division clubs, he finished roughly 69-92 with a 3.12 ERA and 463 strikeouts over 221 games, and set the still-standing modern record of 26 hit batsmen in 1909. His enduring place in history: on May 6, 1915, Warhop surrendered Babe Ruth's first major-league home run, and served up Ruth's second on June 2. He was never a Hall of Famer, and is a common (non-scarce) subject in the T206 set.
