About Ed Walsh
Ed Walsh got his start pitching for a Pennsylvania milling-company team before signing his first pro contract in 1902 with the Meriden Silverites of the Connecticut League; after stops at Wilkes-Barre and Newark, the Chicago White Sox bought his contract and he debuted for them in 1904. A big right-hander who stood about 6-foot-1, he was nicknamed "Big Ed" for his unusual height for the era. Walsh learned the spitball from teammate Elmer Stricklett and rode it to become the deadball era's most durable workhorse. His masterpiece came in 1908, when he went 40-15 with a 1.42 ERA, 11 shutouts and 269 strikeouts over 464 innings; he remains the last pitcher to win 40 games in a season. He starred for the White Sox's 1906 "Hitless Wonders" world champions, winning both his World Series starts and fanning a then-record 12 Cubs in a Game Three shutout, and he threw a no-hitter against Boston on August 27, 1911. Walsh finished 195-126 and his career 1.82 ERA is the lowest in major-league history. He pitched for Chicago through 1916 with a brief 1917 stint for the Boston Braves, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1946. He is one of the marquee Hall-of-Fame subjects in the celebrated T206 set.
