About Bobby Wallace
Rhoderick John "Bobby" Wallace signed off the Pennsylvania sandlots and reached the majors as a pitcher with the Cleveland Spiders in 1894, going 12-14 in 1895 before his glove earned him a permanent spot in the field. Shifted to shortstop in 1899, he became one of the era's premier defenders, pioneering a continuous scoop-and-throw motion that reshaped how the position was played and earning the nickname "Mr. Shortstop." He jumped to the American League's St. Louis Browns in 1902, where a landmark contract worth roughly $32,500 over five years briefly made him baseball's highest-paid player. Over 25 seasons (1894-1918) with Cleveland, the St. Louis Perfectos/Cardinals, and the Browns, Wallace batted .268 with 2,309 hits, led the AL in fielding percentage three times and assists twice, and once handled a then-record 17 chances in a game (June 10, 1902). He also managed the Browns in 1911-12. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1953, and as an AL Browns star he is a solid Hall-of-Fame subject in the T206 set.
