About Danny Hoffman
Daniel John Hoffman was a speedy left-handed outfielder from Canton, Connecticut, who came up off company and Connecticut State League teams (Waterbury and Springfield) before Connie Mack signed him for the Philadelphia Athletics, where he debuted in 1903. He played nine major-league seasons (1903-1911) for the Athletics, the New York Highlanders, and the St. Louis Browns, finishing with a .256 average, 762 hits, and 185 stolen bases over 829 games. His signature feat was leading the American League with 46 stolen bases in 1905. Hoffman is best remembered for one of the deadball era's most serious beanings: on July 1, 1904, a Jesse Tannehill fastball struck him above the right eye, knocking him unconscious for days and permanently damaging his vision, yet he battled back to play seven more seasons. Mack believed Hoffman was nearing "world beater" form before the injury. He later played in the minors through 1916 and died of tuberculosis in 1922 at age 42.
