About Hobe Ferris
Albert Samuel "Hobe" Ferris was born in Trowbridge, England in 1874 and raised on the sandlots of Providence, Rhode Island. He climbed through North Attleboro (1898), Pawtucket of the New England League (1899), and Norwich of the Connecticut League (1900) before reaching the majors with the Boston Americans, for whom he played second base from 1901 to 1907; he closed out his career at third base with the St. Louis Browns in 1908-1909. A .239 career hitter with 1,146 hits, Ferris was deceptively powerful for a middle infielder, roughly 28 percent of his hits going for extra bases (40 homers, 550 RBI). More renowned for his glove, he ranked among the era's finest fielding second basemen, twice leading the American League in both putouts and assists. His signature moment came in the inaugural 1903 World Series: he drove in all three Boston runs in the 3-0 clinching game as the Americans captured the first modern title, and he returned to the 1904 AL pennant winners. Not a Hall of Famer, he is one of the T206 set's many rank-and-file Deadball regulars.
