About Cecil Ferguson

Cecil Benoni "Fergy" Ferguson (August 27, 1883–September 5, 1943) was a right-handed pitcher born in Ellsworth, Indiana. He signed a professional contract with Terre Haute's Class-B club in 1902 while still in high school and worked his way up through the minors at Lansing, South Bend, and Louisville before the New York Giants brought him to the majors. As a rookie in 1906 he led the majors with seven saves and posted a sharp 2.58 ERA. He pitched for the Giants (1906–1907), then for the Boston Doves and their successor Rustlers (1908–1911), his best full season coming in 1908 when he went 11–11 with a 2.47 ERA and, on June 12, held Cincinnati to just two hits. Over parts of six big-league seasons he compiled a 29–46 record, a 3.34 ERA, and 298 strikeouts. After baseball, Ferguson earned an osteopathic degree and became a respected sports physician, treating stars like Bob Feller, Carl Hubbell, and Johnny Mize. He is not a Hall of Famer, and in the T206 set he is one of the many obscure Deadball-era subjects (a "350 Only" series card).
