About Fred Beck

Frederick Thomas Beck, a first baseman and outfielder born November 17, 1886, in Havana, Illinois, began his professional career in 1905 with Bloomington of the Three-I (Illinois–Indiana–Iowa) League. Originally signed as a pitcher, he was shifted to the field because of shaky control, and after strong minor-league seasons he was sold to the San Francisco Seals in 1908. Beck reached the majors with the Boston Doves in 1909 and enjoyed his signature season in 1910, when his 10 home runs tied Chicago's Frank Schulte for the National League (and major-league) home-run crown in that low-scoring deadball year. He spent 1911 split between the Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Phillies, closing out a big-league run of 1909–1911 with a .252 average, roughly 536 hits, 33 homers, and about 250 RBIs over some 635 games; he later resurfaced in the 1914–1915 Federal League with the Chicago Whales. Beck played and managed in the minors as late as 1926 (player-manager of the Cedar Rapids Bunnies). He was not elected to the Hall of Fame, but his 1910 home-run title makes him a noteworthy name among the common-player subjects of the landmark T206 White Border set.
