About Ginger Beaumont
Clarence Howeth "Ginger" Beaumont (1876-1956) was a speedy center fielder from Rochester, Wisconsin, signed off the semipro ranks by Connie Mack for Milwaukee's Western League club in 1898 before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he debuted in 1899. A left-handed leadoff hitter, he starred for Pittsburgh through 1906, then finished with the Boston Doves/Nationals (1907-1909) and the Chicago Cubs (1910). Beaumont won the 1902 National League batting title at .357 and led the NL in hits four times (1902-1904, 1907), including a career-best 209 in 1903, when he also paced the league in runs (137) and total bases (272) for Pittsburgh's pennant winners. He batted .311 lifetime with 1,759 hits. Owner Barney Dreyfuss dubbed him "Ginger," a nod to his red hair and hustling speed. His enduring claim to fame: on October 1, 1903, he became the first man to bat in modern World Series history. Beaumont is not in the Hall of Fame.
