About Bob Ewing

George Lemuel "Bob" Ewing came off an Auglaize County, Ohio farm and turned pro late, pitching for his hometown Wapakoneta club and then the Toledo Mud Hens (1897-1900) and Kansas City (1901) before the Cincinnati Reds signed him. A right-hander, he debuted for Cincinnati in 1902 at age 28 and became one of the National League's first notable spitball artists. Ewing starred eight seasons for the Reds (1902-1909), going 20-11 in 1905 and posting a career-best 1.73 ERA in 1907 over more than 330 innings; his 2.37 ERA remains the best in Reds franchise history. He later pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies (1910-1911) and briefly the St. Louis Cardinals (1912), finishing with a 124-118 record, 2.49 ERA, and 998 strikeouts. Nicknamed "Long Bob" for his height (and "Old Wapak" for his hometown), he was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2001. He is not in Cooperstown.
