About Bob Bescher

Robert Henry Bescher, born in London, Ohio in 1884, attended Notre Dame and starred as a football halfback at Wittenberg before signing his first pro baseball contract in 1906. A big (6'1"), switch-hitting leadoff man and left fielder, he was purchased by the Cincinnati Reds after a strong 1909 minor-league season and made the majors to stay. Bescher became one of the deadball era's premier base stealers, leading the National League in stolen bases four straight years from 1909 through 1912. In 1911 he swiped 81 bases—breaking his own 1910 mark of 70 and setting a modern NL record that stood until Maury Wills in 1962, and a Reds franchise record that lasted until 1962. In 1912 he led the league with 120 runs and finished fifth in Chalmers (MVP) voting. Nicknamed "The London Flash" for his hometown and blazing speed, he played 11 seasons (1908–1918) for Cincinnati, the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cleveland, batting .258 with 1,171 hits and 428 career steals, but never reached a World Series. He died in 1942 when a train struck his car near London, Ohio.
