About Jean Dubuc

Jean Dubuc was born September 15, 1888, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to French-Canadian parents. A star college pitcher at Notre Dame, he lost his amateur standing pitching under an assumed name in a 1908 semipro game and signed with the Cincinnati Reds, for whom he pitched from 1908 to 1910. After a stint in the Eastern League, the right-hander resurfaced with the Detroit Tigers (1912-1916), enjoying his finest years: he went 17-10 with a 2.77 ERA in 1912 and 17-12 with five shutouts in 1915, once beating Walter Johnson 1-0. Writer F.C. Lane dubbed him the "Slow Ball Wizard" for a change-up rated the best in the American League. Dubuc closed out his career with the 1918 World Series champion Boston Red Sox (used as a pinch-hitter in the Series) and the 1919 New York Giants, finishing 85-76 with a 3.04 ERA and a strong .230 lifetime batting average for a pitcher. Peripherally linked to the 1919 Black Sox scandal through grand-jury testimony, he was quietly dropped by John McGraw but never formally banned, continuing in the minors and later scouting for Detroit, where he famously signed Hank Greenberg and Birdie Tebbetts. He died August 28, 1958, in Fort Myers, Florida. His T206 card (150/350 series) is a common, affordable issue among the set's non-Hall-of-Fame subjects.
