About Billy Campbell
William James Campbell, born November 5, 1873, in Pittsburgh, was a left-handed pitcher whose big-league career amounted to parts of four deadball-era seasons. He debuted on April 17, 1905, with the St. Louis Cardinals, then resurfaced with the Cincinnati Reds from 1907 through 1909, throwing his final game on August 23, 1909. A southpaw who also batted left-handed, Campbell posted a modest 23-25 record but backed it with a stingy 2.80 earned run average, striking out 116 batters over 407-2/3 innings. His run-prevention was typical of the low-scoring era in which he pitched, when a sub-3.00 ERA reflected both the dead ball and a pitcher's craft. Campbell never reached the majors again after 1909, the same year Cincinnati appeared on his T206 White Border card, which belongs to the scarcer 350-series subjects. He remained in Cincinnati, where he died on October 6, 1957, at age 83.
