About Bill Dineen

Signed off the Syracuse-area semipro sandlots by Toronto of the Eastern League in 1895 as a 19-year-old, William Henry "Big Bill" Dinneen reached the majors in 1898 and spent twelve seasons as a durable right-handed pitcher. He worked for the Washington Senators (1898-99), the Boston Beaneaters (1900-01), the Boston Americans (1902-07), and finally the St. Louis Browns (1907-09), the club shown on this card. Nicknamed "Big Bill" for his six-foot-one, 190-pound frame, he strung together four straight 20-win seasons and finished 170-177 with a 3.01 ERA and 1,127 strikeouts. His signature moment came in the 1903 World Series, the first of the modern era, where he won three games for the champion Boston Americans, tossed the first two shutouts in Series history, fanned 28 batters over 35 innings, and struck out Honus Wagner to end it. He no-hit the White Sox on September 27, 1905, and in 1904 set American League marks for consecutive complete games (37) and consecutive innings without relief (337⅔). He then became an AL umpire from 1909 to 1937, the only man ever to both throw and umpire a big-league no-hitter.
