About Josh DeVore
Joshua M. "Josh" DeVore (1887-1954), a native of Murray City, Ohio, broke into professional ball in 1906 after his brother arranged a tryout with the Meridian, Mississippi club, and reached the major leagues with John McGraw's New York Giants in 1908. A left-handed outfielder, DeVore played seven big-league seasons (1908-1914) for the Giants, Reds, Phillies, and Boston Braves, compiling a .277 average with 520 hits and 160 stolen bases in 601 games. An expert bunter, walk-drawer, and baserunner, he was the leadoff man on the Giants' pennant winners of 1911 and 1912, swiping 61 bases in 1911. On June 20, 1912, he famously stole four bases in a single inning. Nicknamed "The Seelyville Speed Demon" for the blazing speed he showed during his semipro days in Seelyville, Indiana, DeVore is best remembered for a spectacular running catch in Game Three of the 1912 World Series. He later earned a ring as a reserve with the 1914 "Miracle" Braves. A common-player leadoff sparkplug rather than a scarce name, he is not a Hall of Famer.
