About Art Devlin
Born October 16, 1879, in Washington, D.C., Art Devlin starred in football and baseball at Georgetown before turning pro, and after hitting .287 with 51 steals for Newark in 1903 he caught John McGraw's eye. McGraw installed him at third base for the New York Giants in 1904, and Devlin held the job through 1911 before finishing with the Boston Braves in 1912-1913. A slick fielder and fine baserunner, he tied for the National League stolen-base crown in 1905 with 59 and peaked at the plate in 1906 (.299, 54 steals, 74 walks). He anchored the hot corner on McGraw's 1905 pennant winners and was a world champion when the Giants beat the Athletics in that year's World Series. Over ten big-league seasons he batted .269 with 1,185 hits and 285 stolen bases in 1,313 games. Frank Graham later called him "the greatest third baseman ever to wear a Giant uniform." He died September 18, 1948, in Jersey City. Devlin is a solid, collectible common in the landmark T206 set.
