About Bill Graham
William James Grahame — the card names him "Bill Graham," but Baseball-Reference spells the surname "Grahame" — was a left-handed pitcher born in Owosso, Michigan, in 1883. He reached the majors after knocking around the minor leagues with clubs such as the Grand Rapids Wolverines, Shreveport Pirates, Chattanooga Lookouts, and Rome Romans, and spent his entire big-league career with the American League's St. Louis Browns from 1908 through 1910. He debuted on April 18, 1908, and enjoyed his best year as a rookie, going 6-7 with a sharp 2.30 ERA over 21 games. In 1909 he took a regular turn, working 34 games but finishing 8-14 with a 3.12 ERA, and he struck out a career-high 82. His arm faded quickly: in 1910 he went 0-8 across nine appearances and made his final appearance that June. Grahame retired with a 14-29 record, a solid 2.90 ERA, and 141 strikeouts in 347.2 innings — a short but respectable deadball-era line. He was not a Hall of Famer, and as a common in the T206 set he is a modest, affordable subject rather than a scarce star. He died in Holt, Michigan, in 1936.
